The SUNMENTORS Handbook is a comprehensive training resource developed to support higher education teaching staff in addressing student mental health challenges within the academic environment. As mental health concerns among university students continue to rise across Europe, teaching staff are increasingly required to respond to situations where students experience stress, anxiety, depression, or other psychological difficulties. However, many educators feel that they lack the necessary knowledge and practical guidance to respond effectively. The SUNMENTORS Handbook aims to bridge this gap by providing accessible, structured and practice-oriented training material.

The handbook offers a structured curriculum that combines theoretical understanding of student mental health with practical tools that can be applied in real teaching contexts. It guides teaching staff in recognising early warning signs of mental distress, communicating with students in a supportive and responsible way, and directing them to appropriate professional services when needed. At the same time, it emphasises the importance of maintaining professional boundaries and supporting the wellbeing of teaching staff themselves.

The training material is organised into four thematic modules covering mental health awareness, basic mental health knowledge, communication strategies, and practical approaches for supporting students in real-life academic situations. Through case studies, reflection exercises, and practical examples, the handbook helps educators develop the confidence and skills needed to contribute to a more supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students.

By making this resource openly available, the SUNMENTORS project aims to support higher education institutions across Europe in strengthening their capacity to promote student wellbeing and to integrate mental health awareness into everyday teaching practice.
